Candidates who have cleared the preliminary civil service examination are eligible to appear for the main examination. You would have worked hard for cracking the preliminary exams. Know The Main Exam Pattern
Knowing in detail about the exam pattern, type of questions, and syllabus of the main exam would help to prepare better for the exam. You have to clear a total of nine papers in five days. It is a bit tedious, and you cannot succeed without proper preparation. The nine papers of the main exam include the following.
· Four General study papers
· One Essay paper
· Two optional subject paper
· Two language papers.
The total marks for each paper are for 250, except the language papers which are awarded for 300 marks. The language papers are just for qualifying and the marks scored are not considered for the preparation of merit list.

This is one of the toughest papers of the UPSC main examination. There is no fixed syllabus for this paper. Diversify your preparation and refer a lot of textbooks and books of reputed authors. It is not easy to complete the paper without proper preparation and practice.

Choosing Optional Paper
You have to put in a lot of efforts to clear the optional paper. Choose the right subject that you are good as the syllabus is a bit difficult and burdensome for all the optional subjects. You can choose subjects that you have already studied in your graduation. You can also go for Politics, history, Administration as the syllabus is more or less the same for general studies paper.
Preparing For English Paper
Candidates find it hard to qualify for this exam as it checks for proficiency in English. You have to prepare the grammar topics in the NCERT books of standard I to XII. This would give a strong foundation on grammar.
Preparing For General Studies Paper
Be strong on your basics and fundamental concepts of the topic of study. Refer the textbooks of ICSE and NCERT boards.
You have to have a deeper understanding of the various topics of the subjects included in the general study paper. This would be gained by referring several other reference books related to the subject.
Practice is the key to crack the main exam. Improve your writing skill this would help to clear the exam easily. Revise for the exam just a few weeks before the exams this would help to remember the important concepts.
